Swami Desikan composed Garuda Dandakam praising Sri Garuda, who appeared in front of him after severe penances. This Garuda Dandakam has 108 syllables in each quarter. This work is in praise of Garuda. It is said that a snake charmer challenged Desikan to defy a deadly serpent which he sent towards the Master, and on singing this Dandakam, Garuda appeared and carried away that snake. The snakes represents our problems and obstacles in our life. By hearing or chanting this Garuda Dandakam, all our problems and obstacles will be carried away by Sri Garuda. He will bless us with Brahama Vidya, four purshatas, peace, happiness and prosperity.

This great prayer by Srimad Vedanta Desika extols Garuda, one of the foremost devotees of Lord Vishnu, who also is his steed. This poem is written in the Dandaka meter. This Dandaka in praise of Garuda, was composed, In honour of The Lord who has Garuda in his flag, By a scholar called Venkatesa and fulfill the wishes, And grant many fold blessings to the reciter.
