Many of us know that meat is loaded with saturated fat, cholesterol, and animal cruelty, but as a new study by Consumer Reports reveals, it’s also packed with poop.

According to The Daily News, “458 pounds of store-bought beef that Consumer Reports tested had some level of fecal contamination.”

The article continues:

Twenty percent tested positive for C. perfringens, a bacteria that sickens 1 million people each year, and 10% contained a strain of S. aureus that produces sickening toxins and doesn't go away when cooked. One percent of beef tested positive for salmonella, which may not seem like a lot, but is considering that Americans bought 4.6 billion pounds of beef last year.

It’s not just beef that’s full of crap; recent studies show that nearly half of all chicken purchased in supermarkets is contaminated with fecal matter. In 2011, the USDA reported that 90 percent of defects the agency found in chicken carcasses at slaughter plants involved "visible fecal contamination that was missed by company employees."

To make matter worse, nearly all of the animals raised for food in the United States are pumped full of antibiotics and kept crammed in filthy conditions, creating breeding grounds for dangerous, antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
