This week a load of genetically modified mosquitoes were released in Brazil in an attempt to combat the spread of Dengue Fever. It sounds counterintuitive because the disease is spread by mosquitoes. Anyway, for this week's fact hunt we thought we'd look at Dengue Fever and four other horrible diseases and infections that occur around the world. It's not pleasant and we hope you never have to suffer any of these, including: leishmaniasis, guinea worm, necrotising fasciitis and elephantiasis (lymphatic filariasis).
The thumbnail shows the bacteria, Bacillus anthracis, which causes anthrax and is not included on this list.
